Olmsted and Hexagons

I am trying to find some information about Olmsteds extensive use of hexagons in NYC streetscapes and at the Summer House in DC.
 
I would like to know if there was intentionality behind this and if so, what was it?

That's very an intriguing issue. I'd better check this URL out.

I know that hexagonal is the structure that water molecules prefer and naturally align to given the right milieu. There has also been recently a hexagon discovered in Jupiter's atmosphere (clearly visible). So it seems definite that the hexagon is a blueprint of life itself and it wouldnt surprise me if Olmsted knew about this and tried to emulate or tap into it.
